Solidarity stickers

The anti-democratic environment that Turkey has turned into affects all dissidents from different sections. With Freedom Protectors, we designed stickers for 4 people that we have chosen symbolically in solidarity with those in prison.

Ahmet Altan: Renowned novelist and journalist Ahmet Altan had been behind bars more than 4 years. He was editor-in-chief of the Taraf newspaper, which was banned by the Turkish government. In September 2016 Altan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for various, made up reasons linked to terrorism. The 70-year-old writer continued his writing while in prison. On 14 April 2021, Turkey released Ahmet Altan after more than four years in prison.

Selahattin Demirtaş: Kurdish politician and former HDP leader Selahattin Demirtaş has been in prison in Istanbul since November 2016 due to the Erdogan regime's policy of intimidating opponents. The Turkish court is blocking the release of Demirtaş despite ECHR orders for his release. They even initiated new investigations on terrorism charges. Turkey doesn’t need polarizing politicians; It needs peaceful politicans.

Fevzi Yazıcı: He was visual director of the “Zaman” newspaper, which was banned by the Turkish government. The newspaper he directed received many design awards in the international arena. He has been in prison under difficult conditions since 2016. You can find his life story, and the illustrations he made while in prison, in the Washington Post essay.

Osman Kavala: He is a Turkish businessperson, human rights defender and philanthropist. He has been in jail since 2017. Kavala is accused of orchestrating the Gezi Park mass protests in a trial described as absurd by rights groups. National and international lawyers demanding his immediate release, including the European Court of Human Rights.
